Oak wilt is a severe disease of oaks–especially live oaks and red oaks. If not managed, it will usually kill these species. Sam Hill Tree Care is a leader in the diagnosis and management of oak wilt. We have multiple Texas Oak Wilt Qualified arborists on staff. We maintain a database of disease centers. We collaborate with plant pathologists and the Texas Forest Service on the assessment and management of the disease in the metroplex. The best management strategy is to avoid introducing the disease into your neighborhood by avoiding pruning between mid-February and mid-June. If pruning is required during that window due to storms or for other reasons, then all wounds should be immediately sealed with a pruning sealer. Sam Hill Tree Care only uses the proven macro-infusion fungicide treatments as recommended by Texas A&M and the Texas Forest Service. Preventative applications are most effective and timing is critical.

Despite their sturdy appearance, some trees occasionally need some supplemental support. These trees may have structural defects or conditions that increase the likelihood of failure of limbs, trunks, or entire trees. This failure could lead to injury or property damage. Sam Hill Tree Care can evaluate your tree and determine if cabling and/or bracing could safely reduce the risk and preserve the tree. A tomograph uses sound impulses to evaluate the density of a tree’s trunk or branches. “The Arbotom® tomograph unit provides an inside view of the tree that you simply can’t get from a visual review,” said SHTC founder, Sam Hill.

After properly diagnosing the problem, Sam Hill Tree Care provides effective, targeted insect and disease treatments that conserve beneficial insects. A Resistograph® uses a long thin needle that is physically turned into the wood to measure possible decay. Similar to an EKG, the arborist receives data as to whether the tree is hollow, decayed, or solid. This tool is considered slightly invasive and is only used should the situation require it.

At some point, due to location or condition, some trees need to be removed. Sam Hill Tree Care specializes in removing trees in restricted locations due to buildings or other obstructions and will also remove the stumps if desired.

Pruning is the selective removal of limbs from your trees for a specific purpose. Our ISA Certified Arborists will meet you and carefully listen to what you hope to achieve by pruning. Then they will evaluate each tree and develop specifications to meet your objectives while optimizing the health and appearance of the tree. Fertile soil is crucial to the health of your trees. However, many urban soils are deficient in essential nutrients due to construction activities, removal of leaf litter, and/or tie-up with soil contaminants. On the other hand, many trees receive improper amounts of some nutrients, fostering excessive growth that is prone to certain insect and disease outbreaks. After evaluating soil conditions and tree health, we can create a soil fertility program for your trees to correct deficiencies, maintain tree health, or even promote moderate growth. Soil fertilization is applied in accordance with ANSI A300 Standards and Best Management Practices.
